2×2 Sketchbook// The Halfway Point

31 Week Collage
This week Anne and I are celebrating the fact that we are halfway through or shared sketchbooks. I can hardly believe that 31 weeks have come and gone with this project. It has been fun and at times challenging, this little project of ours. Each week it’s a surprise as to what either one of us will come up with. We hope that you will feel inspired to start either your own collaborative sketchbook or perhaps some other joint project. It will cause you to get out of your comfort zone and have fun.

We wanted to share a few of our favorite spreads so far. Mine are below.

Week 16
Week 16. I love this spread (mine left/Anne’s right) for a couple of reasons. 1. It’s so very calming to me to look at. The greens and blues are so soothing don’t you think. 2. Landscapes are very different for the both of us. We both commented that we would like to do more landscapes. So far I haven’t.

Week 17
Week 17. I really love Anne’s detailed sketch of her cute terrariums. They make me so happy to look at. I had been experimenting with white on black and thought it would look nice to show the negative but I chose to paint bottles, mostly imaginary, on mine.

Week 22
Week 22. This spread sings to me. I can picture these gouache paintings (mine left/ Anne’s right) framed up and sitting next to each other. Plus, the colors. So pretty to me. LOVE!

I haven’t gone over to Anne’s blog yet to see what she wrote and chose as her favorite spreads. I’m going now. Make sure you do too.

2×2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks//Week 30

Week 30

Dana(l)/Anne(r)

I really love plaids. I guess it goes back to my textile/surface design background where before there were computer programs to create plaid we would paint them by hand taping off the lines and using toothbrushes to spatter the paint to get a woven look. I also created plaids on the loom in my weaving course. It’s fun to play with color in plaids. The funny thing is I really don’t own many plaid things. Maybe I need to consider adding some to my life.
Week 30 Detail
I love these two plaid circles sitting next to each other. Make sure to visit Anne’s blog for her post this week.

2×2: 2 artists, 2 sketchbooks, a collaboration between artists Dana Barbieri and Anne Butera.

Dana and Anne met in an online painting class. Although they have never met in person they have become friends through regular visits to each others blogs. It was through this connection that this project began.
Wanting to move from friendship to collaboration, each spent two months filling one half of a sketchbook
before mailing it off to the other. Dana worked on the left-hand pages and Anne on the right. Each will be responding to the other’s work on the adjacent sketchbook pages over the coming year. Watch weekly as they reveal another page of their story.aA

About the artists:

Dana is an artist and crafter living in the foothills of the Catskill mountains two hours north of New York City with her husband, two children and little kitty. She is passionate about painting, knitting, crochet, color, pattern and design.

Anne is an artist, writer and crafter who finds inspiration and joy in the beauty of her garden and the magic of nature. Dissatisfied with and disheartened by the pace and lifestyle of the city, she and her husband (with their two rescued greyhounds and an aging Siamese) relocated to a small town in the beautiful Driftless region in southwest Wisconsin with the goal of living a slower, simpler, more intentional life.

2×2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks//Week 29

Week 29
I had so much fun with this page. I definitely went wonky and wild with my yarn embroidery. I grabbed some canvas that was wrinkled and just started stitching with no real plan. I knew that I wanted to pick up the black and the lines from Anne’s delicate drawing so I went with that. I love the texture and homespun feel that happened. I want to explore it some more maybe with more of a plan.
Week 29 Detail
Go check out Anne’s post for the week. I love what she had to say.

Week 23

Dana (l)/Anne(r)

It’s a fun little spread this week. When I looked at Anne’s page I thought that I would do a page of ants but really once I looked at some images of ants I quickly changed my mind. Sorry ants I’m just not a fan. But I do love ladybugs and I thought the red would actually look very pretty with the brown of Anne’s dirt.

Week 22

Dana (l)/Anne(r)

I really love this week and I know I say this all the time but I really think these two paintings work so well together. I love the colors Anne chose and I remember how much fun I had painting my plant.

2×2: 2 Artists, 2 Sketchbooks//Week 21

Week 21

Dana (l)/Anne (r)

This week lots of feelings are being stirred up. It’s the last full week of summer vacation and the beginning of September. Things are going to shift again next week. It’s always a bit hard for me to send the kids back to school.
So when I sat down to paint this page I really began to relax. Anne’s small cut up watercolor square remind me of tiny skyscapes. It feels very soothing to me and that is what I wanted to capture and experience when I created my corresponding page. And I did. 🙂

Week 20

Dana (l)/Anne (r)

I was in a very colorful space when I created my page for this week. I was playing a bunch in a color journal (which I think I need to revisit) and I decided to try this abstract color composition in Anne’s sketchbook. I love how sweet Anne’s bouquet looks with my very abstract piece.
